The geothermal heat pump (GHP), also known as geothermal heat pump
(GSHP) or generically as geoexchange, geothermal application is the
fastest growing today. GSHP technology is a highly efficient renewable
energy that is gaining wide acceptance for both residential and
commercial buildings, with 1.4 million installations worldwide for 2005,
and an increase of 1,854 MWt of capacity in 1995-15284 in 2005 MWt.
Geothermal heat pumps are used for heating and space cooling and water
heating. The technology is based on the fact that the Earth (beneath the
surface) remains at a relatively constant temperature throughout the
year, warmer than the air above it during the winter and cool in the
summer. GSHP systems do work that normally requires two appliances, a
furnace and an air conditioner and use 25% -50% less electricity than
conventional heating or cooling.
